Buddy Valastro Finally Wins A Food Network Cake Challenge
![]() |
Buddy Valastro – the Susan Lucci of the Food Network – finally won a Cake Challenge. It’s about damn time.
After five losses, Buddy’s completely average, stereotypical white wedding cake with generic rolled fondant flowers gave him the win. But here’s the problem: yes, Buddy won, but he only won by default. DID YOU SEE THE HIDEOUS CAKES HIS COMPETITORS MADE?! I don’t know if the people at the Food Network felt bad for him or what, because they put him up against 3 amateur competitors who looked like they’ve never made a cake in their lives.
1. A hideous “munchkin” donut cake, wrapped in one of Cher’s old wigs:

2. An old fashioned looking half cupcake/half cake monstrosity:

3. And whatever the hell THIS was supposed to be:

4. Buddy’s cake. Obviously the best, but only because the others were so FUGLY:

We probably wouldn’t be so hard on Buddy if he wasn’t such a douchebag to the judges and to the bride he was working with (Stephanie Syzmanski). Two minutes into meeting his client, he barked at her: “You’re the bride, but I’m the baker, and you’re gonna listen to me.” Oh really? If that’s how he talks to his clients, he won’t be in business for long.
After the competition, one of the judges said they wanted to see more technique from him. He got defensive, started huffing and puffing like a spoiled schoolgirl, and rudely snapped back: “I disagree. I showed a lot of technique. I’d like to see someone make all the different sorts of flowers that i made.” Oh give it a rest, Buddy. You rolled some flowers and stuck them on a nasty looking cake covered in fondant. I did the same thing with my Play-Doh and my Easy Bake oven when I was 8 years old.
Where’s my $10,000 check?

THIS WEEK: Another tailgating weekend! Alex G's onion rings, an awful slow cooker experience, Ina & Jeffrey Garten's lame steak throwdown, Jennifer Hudson's annoying Weight Watchers commercial, Restaurant Impossible's cheap makeovers, and more.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw that. Though I actually kinda liked the cupcake one…
I was surprised to see Susan Falkner compete. Not sure a croquembouche was the right thing to do but FN were lucky to get her to appear.
good on Buddy for pulling out the win. I’d love to see Goldman compete again. His “win” for Baltimore city harbor was a joke.
congrats!BUDDY FINALLY YOU WON A FOOD CHALLENGE,PERSEVERANCE IS THE SECRET OF SUCCESS!
Supposedly Buddy Valastro is getting a show on TLC ala “Ace of Cakes” so you can see for yourself how he treats his clients.
That would be Duff Goldman, retard.
No, that would be Buddy Valastro’s “Cake Boss”, dork.
Yeah just what we need.Another show going thru the machinations of cake making. Who decided cakes and TV made for compelling entertainment ?
Maybe Buddy will oustshine that asshat Goldman and give his clients good value for the buck and cakes that you can actually eat. Maybe let the public know that some dinky little cake needn’t have to cost $1500.00 and up.
Go Buddy !
This is the only way this guy is ever going to get a win. No imagination. Why would they give him a show? Although it could be fun to watch him insult the customers.
I don’t remember which challenge it was, but somebody made these incredibly elaborate and lifelike sugar flowers that were amazing. Buddy’s were nice and all, but not great enough that he has a right to get all defensive, especially since everything on that cake was fondant and therefore, not really showing different techniques.
Really well said, Automne. I agree. His work is EHH, nowhere near good enough for him to have the bloated ego that he has.
I frankly don’t believe TLC is giving him a show.
I DISAGREE TOTALLY WITH THE COMMENT THAT BUDDY VALASTRO IS
RUDE. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF ORDERING MY DAUGHTER’S BIRTHDAY
CAKE FROM HIM. We HAD NEVER MET BUDDY VALASTRO BEFORE AND
HE TREATED US LIKE WE HAD KNOWN HIM FOR YEARS. HE HAD ALL THE PATIENCE IN THE WORLD IN HELPING US DECIDE. IN ADDITION TO CALLING US TO MAKE SURE ALL DETAILS WERE TAKING CARE.CUSTOMER SERVICE AT IT’S BEST. HE TRULY IS AN ARTIST
AND AS FOR TASTE …DELICIOUS!!!!!!!
Just watched Buddy’s show (April 19th show- was it the first?). I thought it was more about the yelling among the staff, which includes lots of family, and Buddy’s puffing, than about the cakes. They showed 3 different black and white wedding cakes for Brides Magazine, using 3 different decorating techniques. They were all fondant covered. We only got to see him do the one with piping, and never saw how they did the stenciling or the fondant cutouts.
The only other cake we saw, and Buddy seemed to have trouble figuring out how to do it, was a really cool fishing boat sitting on a an ocean cake. He admits to being “old school”, and is most comfortable making traditional cakes with lots of piping.
As for Buddy’s insulting and rude behavior – all I can say is you must not know any other Italian’s from New Jersey.
Now, about Duff – I have taken so many ideas and how-to’s from his show. And he gives his “crew” credit for all they do, including planning, designing and executing.
Didn’t see that from Buddy; you’d think he was doing all the work by himself, except making flowers. And ordering sugar, which, apparently, is beneath him, and should have been taken care of by someone who wasn’t even in town last week, and no one thought to pick up the slack. I have NEVER seen Duff blame anyone else in his bakery for mistakes like that.
Oh my gosh, duff is sooooooooooo STUPID. He does not even make professional cakes. They look like things a kid could make and his show is not even interesting. Buddy is funny and PS did you freaks not know that they ask him to do some of thoes things for the show! Some happen but some is acting. Did you not know that? Buddy is a really sweet guy. So shut your mouths idf you dont Like BUDDY! GO BUDDY! Also in buddys book he wrote he talked about his challenges, he admitted to not having the best cakes or desinging terrible strucutes and HE KNOWS THAT! Also he told the bride “I am the baker, your the bride” and he knows what he is doing. So all of you bad mouthers suut is up
All right, so I had never even heard of Buddy until I saw him compete on one of the Challenges on TFN the other day. I just recently started recording them on my TIVO… Anyway, I saw him on a bridal challenge (I don’t know how old it was, but it was the one where the young couple were from Oklahoma, and didn’t like the monogram he’d decided on for the front of one of the tiers) and I thought he was a complete ass! I was so happy that he lost. He was so overly confident and huffy and was walking around like he was the best thing since sliced bread. He was so proud of himself because he got done early with his cakes that he was strutting around like a peacock. Yes, he put them together very well. He has good technique and a lot of talent, but why does he have to be such a god-awful, horrible person?
Right on, Annie. That’s exactly why I can’t stand the guy. He’s a smug d-bag who is far more in love with himself than he has any right to be.
His show on TLC is a yawner. Even Ass of Cakes is more enjoyable to watch. And that doesn’t say alot either.
Buddy is a good cake decorator. Why in Good Gods name does he have a TV show ?
This guy’s cakes look pretty good actually. I think he can design and bake circles around the kids at Charm City. His finished products look professional.Charm City ckaes look like a bunch of young kids threw them together. The people figurines look like 4 yrs olds did them. Valastro’s look much more real
Unlike Oscar Goldman, Valastro is attached to real bakery where they actually bake and sell stuff and business is contingent on producing an excellent product.
I’d love to see a cake throwdown between Buddy and Goldman. My money is on Valastro. Goldman probably would find some excuse to chicken out .Battle of the Network Cake Stars.
I totally agree with you. I think his cakes look like a piece of junk. Also they have like wood in the sturctures, buddy would never do that..
Meg,
I don’t know if you’ve ever made a cake before, but in order for the tiered cakes to be able to support their own weight, they need some kind of doweling inside them. Otherwise it will just collapse on itself. Buddy would have to put wood (or plastic) in his taller cakes or they’d fall apart!
While the self-indulgent, self-important cow who was “going to make a croquembouche no matter what” definitely did not belong on the same stage with the others, the others – including Buddy – were clearly superior to her – and that includes the other woman, who merely ran out of time.
All those who pretend that they can make a cake anywhere near as good as Buddy, or Joshua John Russell, is welcome to post pictures of their accomplishments.
Yeah, I didn’t think so.
Lately I have been watching more and more food shows and etc. I remember Buddy from Pixar Cakes when he tried to make the Scar. I felt that if it stayed together it could have won. I loved the mobility and the fire, but I loved the licorice for the mane and etc on Scar, and if it was legal, it was a stroke of genius. You dumbass anti Buddy dipshits out there would have never thought of that!
I guess you can say I accidently rediscovered Buddy not too lond ago. My girlfriend was a Jon and Kate plus 8 fan and she turned me onto the show. We watched and I didnt feel like changing the channel so I was like what the hell is Cake Boss? Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed the show and fell in love with some of the stuff that Buddy does. I like the “Italian Jersey Gordon Ramsey” attitude when he gets upset. I also like Ace of Cakes, but I think Buddy is more entertaining and more skillful than Duff. I would love to see Buddy and Duff head to head in an Iron Chef type battle, my money is on Buddy!
I give him alot of credit to deal with a stero typical Italian family.
Finally I did watch Bride Cake Challenge and was pulling for Buddy from the start. I loved his cake! It was the old school cakes that he time and time again says that he likes making. It was his to win, he was in his comfort zone. It was a beautiful job, and the attitude with the bride was perect. He was the expert and he laid it on the line on how things were going to work in his kitchen.
That ends my rant and to sum it up, Buddy you are the the best at what you do! I love your stuff and keep it going strong. Knowing that I live only four hours away from NJ and that Carlo’s delivers a 5 hr radius I would consider a cake! To all those that will not lke this post I am a student at Johnson and Wales, even though I am hospitality I have worked in Hotels for a few years and have learned a lot from the Baking and Pastry majors, so I’m not ignorant to the subject!
I watched this show and I did not think it in the least bit rude for Buddy to speak up; it’s called “respectfully disagreeing” which he has every right to do! And for those who think he has no imagination, you need to watch his show. He has done some absolutely phenomenal work. He even did a cake for a spoiled rotten ungrateful bride and managed to keep his cool when everyone else was ready to strangle her. Buddy may have “won by default” but it was “de fault of de udda people” for not delivering a quality product.
Ok I’m a little late on this blog but this is the first time I’ve seen ita and I love this show but this episode drove me nuts! I love your comments soooo true! omg seriously what is wrong with the one who did the ‘hideous munchkin cake’ I forget what her name is I think they throw her in there for ratings seriously! We all know Carrie HATES her and the feeling is mutual and we all knwo that whatever she makes is indeed going to be FUUUUUGLY did u see the holiday one where she basically wrapped a christmas tree in what looked like toilet paper?? Really? and then she went on and on about how it was art and no one understands her blah blah blah boo hoo ITS UGLY stop trying to pretend like its not! THe thing that really bugged me about this episode was these stupid pathetic brides-to-be who sat there thinking wow I really don’t like this cake but didnt speak up!! HELLO! THis is YOUR WEDDING waht is wrong with you idiots! That would be the day that someone made my wedding cake and was not that way I wanted it. Excuse me? Is this your wedding? Is this the day you’ve been dreaming of since you were 5? I DONT THINK SO! Thank you for this blog I really needed to vent about that episode I feel better now :)
can you make me a cake on my birthbay sweet13.
can food challenge make me a bday cake for my 13th birthday??????plz!!!
Buddy’s cakes are juvenile in comparison to the other challengers that have graced the FN cake challenges. Duff may or may not be a better cake artist, but his demeanor and the work environment he creates in his shop far exceeds the over-the-top forced Brooklyn accent and behavior Buddy displays. If Buddy doesn’t want appear to be rehearsing for a gangster role, he needs to tone it down and quit over reacting about every little thing. His show is just awful!
I realize I’m a year late in commenting, but I’ve just been irritated by Buddy (probably for the last time) and your posting could well have been mine. Thanks for saying it so well.
Yeah, cause your a famous baker with two sucessful Tv shows and books. You guys are just losers and haters who don’t have anything better to do. This website sucks. You two twenty year old single nerds go complain to your chess club about Buddy’s fabulous success. He worked hard to get where he is now.
I<3Buddy
Wow, this is a little bit harsh eh? Buddy is an amazing artist and well known. who the hell are you?
Buddy is a stereo-typical NJ Italian. They all act that way. Every region in the US has some sort of accent or behavioral trait that annoy others, especially twangy southern accents or North Bostonites who seem to have forgotten how to speak English altogether. Most people that made comments on this blog can’t bake a cake unless it comes out of a box. I don’t blame Buddy for treating the judges the way he did, on other competitions the judges don’t use care with their words towards competitors, it’s like they all want to be Simon Cowell, nastyand humiliating seems to be in. Buddy makes about 200 cakes a year for charity; he invited 10 kids from the make-a-wish foundation to bake with him for a day and joined forces with Kelly Ripa to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Research. TV is made for drama, that’s what gets people talking. Producers edit video footage so it appears harsh when in reality we don’t know what transpired to make someone react the way they did. The proof is in the pudding, Buddy is one of the top wedding cake makers in the country. He took over Carlo’s bakery as master baker at the age of 17 after his father past away and in the last 15 years he has made the business a household name. I would like to know what any of you have done in your lives to help others, help your family when all seems lost, persevere when the odds are against you and still enjoy everyday of your life.
I have family that lives in both Baltimore and Hoboken and being that we are Italian/Mexican, our lives pretty much revolve around food. I have eaten Duff’s cakes and Buddy’s cakes and I have to say that hands down, Duff’s cakes taste like a Mexican sharted and then stirred it with their ass. The cakes are dry as hell and the fillings taste like either canned icing or they are so wild that they are just disgusting. Plainly put, Duff’s cakes taste like shit. Buddy’s cakes are really good though. They are moist, the fillings and icings are really good and all the other delicious confectionary delights are really good too. As far as him being rude – he’s Italian and from NJ. It’s pretty much a requirement that you have to be loud and argumentative. Viva la Buddy V.
Wow, who ever wrote this obviously is a jealous hater! I’ve been in this bakery only a couple of times to get a cake and some pastries. I’ve met buddy and several other family members a couple of times and all of them, not just buddy, are very nice hard working people. The author of this article is pretty pathetic. His jealosy is oozing out of his pours and onto paper.
U know what Jillian, shut the f up!
Buddy Valastra is a talented and amazing baker you can do nothing what he can do.
@CakeEater,
I agree with you , Buddy’s show has given me alot of ideas and techniques for my cakes, and anyone who has ever watched his shows, Knows that if anyone can deal withsome like His sister mary Has Gotta Have A Sence of humor ,LOL that proves the case Right there LOL, he is an Incredable Cake artist , with amazing talent,
I watch Buddy on Cake Boss regularly. Yes, he yells a lot, yes he picks on his family, yes, he’s quick to anger, but that’s a typical Italian family, mine is the same way. If you watch, you also see him explaining (and showing) exactly how much he loves his family, and exactly how much they mean to him.
As for Food Network Challenge, I honestly think Buddy is one of the most talented pastry chefs in the biz, but the problem is time. Making a cake in eight hours doesn’t allow much time to give each component the proper detail it needs. When Buddy is not rushing, taking his time to do the art the way he wants, he’s the Michaelangelo of cakes. I’ve watched Ace of Cakes (which some of you compare it too) and I’m seriously not impressed. Duffs work is ok, better than I can do, but it’s nothing compared to Buddy.
why is everyone hating on Buddy??
his cakes are amazing<33
im a 15 year old aspiring baker (in fact, i just finished a cake) and Buddy is like my idol
my insperation
and i love his show
its my drug show<33
haha
but seriously, yall are crazy
I Agree
Stephanie is my cousin(: That cake was amazing!!
It’s funny after a couple of years how WRONG the critics of Buddy is .Apparently he’s very successful and very likable by people worldwide.Goes to show how much food snobs and the judges on the cake challenge know!
I think Buddy’s show is amazing. There’s never a dull or boring moment, plus the cakes he and his team make are simply awesome… I can’t say the same for that Goldman dude, watched his show twice and I almost died. All he did was talk and he hardly ever helped out. Y’all can hate on Buddy all you want but everyone knows he’s one of the best in the business.
Haters gonna hate.
What’s wrong with this website?
Lord, go ahead and pick on people just because they are more sucessful than you.
Like you don’t wish you were Buddy Valastro.
